Learning French to live, work and feel at ease in Paris

I'm Fabienne Defaux, a French teacher and certification examiner, and I've spent over 15 years working with expatriates and their families in Paris.

Some of our learners start from scratch, while others have already learned French before. But regardless of their starting point, I've often seen the same difficulty.

Even when people make progress, they don't always feel fully comfortable using French in real-life situations.

This is not because they lack motivation.
It is often because what they learn is not clearly structured, does not follow a consistent learning path, and is not sufficiently connected to how French is actually used in everyday interactions in Paris.

That's exactly what FrenchUp is designed to do.

It's a structured programme that guides you step by step from where you are, with clear progression, real-life practice and continuous support.

Shopping, ordering at a bakery, talking to a doctor, asking questions at school, or dealing with administrative situations without hesitation, stress or cultural faux-pas.

What you will learn and develop

FrenchUp is built around real-life situations in Paris, so that what you learn can be used directly in your daily life.

This practical approach is supported by a clear progression aligned with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), with learning objectives defined at the beginning of your programme.

  • Understanding and taking part in everyday conversations

Learn how French is actually used in real interactions, and develop the ability to follow and participate more naturally.

    You will practice:

    • understanding how people speak in everyday situations
    • reacting appropriately in conversations
    • asking questions, clarifying and keeping a conversation going
  • Expressing yourself more clearly and naturally

Move from knowing what you want to say to being able to say it more fluidly and accurately.

    You will work on:

    • structuring your ideas when speaking
    • using the right expressions and sentence patterns
    • improving your French pronunciation and your ability to be understood
    • reducing hesitation and speaking with more ease
  • Handling real-life situations in Paris

Build the language and confidence needed to navigate common situations in your daily life.

Depending on your context, this may include:

    • social interactions and informal conversations
    • professional situations and workplace communication
    • everyday administrative or practical situations
  • Strengthening your foundation over time

Consolidate your grammar and vocabulary in a way that supports real communication.

    You will:

    • build and reinforce key structures progressively
    • expand your vocabulary in relevant contexts
    • improve both your fluency and your accuracy over time
  • Understanding French culture and communication codes

Language is always introduced in context, through situations that reflect everyday life in Paris.

    You will:

    • explore how everyday situations work in France (for example, what to expect in places like cafés, shops, or social settings)
    • understand how language is used in context, including elements such as politeness and common habits
    • be exposed to cultural references through selected resources (films, music, articles) connected to each topic
    • notice and better understand the small cultural details that influence everyday interactions

This helps you feel more at ease in everyday interactions, better understand how things work in Paris, and build more meaningful connections.

Your learning objectives are regularly reviewed and adjusted throughout the programme to ensure consistent and meaningful progress.

How it works

How FrenchUp works

FrenchUp is designed as a complete French learning system, combining live French classes, guided practice between sessions and continuous pedagogical support.

  • 1

30 hours of guided learning with a dedicated teacher

    30 hours of sessions,
typically over 3 to 6 months

In Paris (home, office or café) or online

    Individual, duo or trio
    with a dedicated teacher

1 to 2 sessions per week,
    most of them 1h30 long

The 30 hours correspond to your live French classes with your dedicated teacher, which form the core of the programme.
This 30-hour format is designed to help you progress by approximately half a level to one full level on the CEFR scale, depending on your starting point, pace and level of engagement.

Throughout the programme, you work with the same dedicated teacher, who follows your progress and supports you over time.

The rhythm and format of your sessions are designed to provide enough exposure to new language, time to practise, and continuity between sessions, without overload.

Each session focuses on helping you use French effectively, whether in real-life situations or for more specific objectives such as preparing an exam, strengthening a particular skill or working through a difficulty.
Together, they form a clear and structured learning path, while allowing space to focus on your own personal or professional context when needed.

They are guided by one central objective: helping you develop practical French that you can use directly in your daily life.

Each session follows a consistent flow and here is how a typical session unfolds:

    A typical session

    1h30
    Welcome and topic introduction

Settle in, reconnect with your teacher, and share any recent situations, questions or difficulties.
Your teacher then introduces the topic and objectives of the session in a clear and interactive way.

    Warm-up

A short review activity to refocus, check what you have retained, and revisit key points from the previous session if needed.

Introduction of a new key structural concept

Through a short real-life scenario, you discover or reinforce a key grammar or language point that will help you express yourself more accurately.

Exploration of key vocabulary and expressions

You work on a carefully selected set of essential words and expressions related to the topic, the kind native speakers actually use.
You improve your pronunciation, explore cultural nuances, and learn how to use them naturally and appropriately in context.

    Practice and contextualised activities

Through contextualised structural exercises, guided conversation activities and role-play, you practise the new concepts and vocabulary in a safe and supportive space to become more at ease and spontaneous in real communication situations.
At every step, you receive personalised feedback and guidance from your teacher.

Resources to go further and wrap-up

Your teacher provides a clear summary, feedback and practical tips.
You are introduced to follow-up activities on the platform and the focus of your next session.

    Learning continues between sessions

Your learning does not stop between sessions. It continues in a structured and flexible way, supported by both your personal learning space and your teacher.

Between sessions, you have access to Neo, your personal learning space. It is designed to help you revisit and consolidate what you have worked on during your sessions, especially the structured thematic sessions forming the core of the programme. You will find for example:

FrenchUp student practising French on Neo, their personal learning platform, between sessions

You can use these resources at your own pace, depending on your availability and your own rhythm of learning. Their use is encouraged, but not mandatory.

To get the most out of your programme, we generally recommend dedicating around 1h to 1h30 between sessions to review and practise what you have learned.

For sessions focused on your specific objectives, your teacher may also share targeted materials or exercises directly with you.

    Staying connected between sessions

You can also stay in touch with your teacher and our team through Slack. This allows you to:

    • ask questions between sessions
    • receive useful reminders and resources
    • receive targeted follow-up or additional practice shared by your teacher when relevant
    • stay connected to your learning and your French practice throughout the programme
  • 3

    Continuous follow-up and adjustments

Throughout the programme, your learning is actively monitored and guided to support consistent and meaningful progress in real-life French communication.

At key moments, one of our pedagogical coordinators checks in with you to:

    • review your progress
    • identify any difficulties or new needs
    • adjust the focus or structure of your sessions if necessary

These check-ins complement the ongoing work done with your teacher and help maintain a clear direction throughout your programme.

Short evaluation moments are also integrated into your learning, allowing you to reflect on what you can already do in French and what to focus on next.

This continuous follow-up helps ensure that your learning remains coherent, progressive and aligned with your objectives over time.

FAQ

Your questions answered

How is FrenchUp different from regular French lessons?

FrenchUp is not a collection of standalone lessons or occasional private French classes. It is a structured learning programme.

Instead of deciding independently what to work on from one session to the Next, you follow a clear and progressive learning path, supported by:

  • a dedicated teacher
  • a shared pedagogical framework
  • structured content and tools (Neo)
  • continuous guidance throughout your programme

This helps ensure that your learning remains consistent, relevant, aligned with the CEFR, and firmly focused on real-life communication in Paris.

How personalised is the programme?

Your programme is fully personalised. However, most expats face similar real-life situations in Paris. Rather than reinventing everything from scratch, we build on these shared needs to structure your learning in a clear and efficient way. From there, we adapt the programme to your specific context, goals and priorities. This ensures your learning is both highly relevant and well structured.

Why does FrenchUp focus on real-life situations?

FrenchUp is designed around the idea that language is learned more effectively when it is directly connected to situations you actually experience.

Rather than learning French in an abstract way, you progressively work on situations, interactions and communication patterns that are part of everyday life in Paris.

This helps you reuse what you learn more naturally outside the sessions, develop practical communication skills, and feel progressively more at ease using French in real contexts.

How long does it take to progress by one CEFR level?

FrenchUp is designed so that a 30-hour programme typically leads to progress of approximately half to one CEFR level, particularly in real-life communication and everyday interactions.

That said, progress depends on several factors:

  • your consistency and attendance
  • your engagement between sessions
  • your starting level and learning profile

We focus on meaningful, lasting progress rather than artificial acceleration.

How much time should I plan each week?

FrenchUp is designed around a consistent learning rhythm.

We typically recommend:

  • 1 to 2 sessions per week (1 hour 30 minutes each)
  • plus 30 minutes to 1 hour of guided practice between sessions

This combination of live sessions and structured follow-up work is key to building real, lasting progress.

What happens between sessions?

Your learning continues between sessions.

You have access to:

  • Neo, your personal learning platform (structured content, review, practice)
  • Slack, to stay in touch with your teacher and our team

This ensures continuity, support and real progress over time.

Who is my teacher?

You are assigned a dedicated teacher who follows you throughout your programme.

Your teacher works within our shared pedagogical framework and in close coordination with our pedagogy team. This ensures:

  • consistency across your learning journey
  • a clear and structured progression
  • personalised guidance adapted to your needs

All our teachers are native French speakers and fully qualified in teaching French as a foreign language (FLE).

Can I prepare for a French exam with FrenchUp?

Yes. FrenchUp can integrate preparation for exams such as: DELF, DCL FLE, TCF, TEF, particularly for learners preparing for naturalisation or wishing to officially validate their level.

This is included as part of your personalised sessions, depending on your objectives.

Will I receive a certificate at the end?

Yes. Once your FrenchUp programme is complete, we will provide:

  • a certificate of participation
  • a detailed learning report with pedagogical feedback and recommendations for your next steps
Is FrenchUp suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. FrenchUp is designed for learners from complete beginners (A0) to advanced levels (C1.1).

For beginners, the programme progressively introduces the essential structures, vocabulary and communication patterns needed to start interacting in French in everyday situations.

The learning path is adapted to your starting point and guides you step by step, with a strong focus on building confidence and practical communication skills from the beginning.

Are the classes individual or group-based?

FrenchUp is available in individual, duo or trio formats.

Duo and trio formats are designed for people who already know each other, such as partners, friends, family members or colleagues, and who wish to follow the programme together.

In all cases, the programme remains structured, personalised and guided by the same pedagogical framework.

Is this suitable if I have a busy schedule?

Yes, provided you can commit to a consistent schedule.

FrenchUp is built around a structured learning rhythm. At the start of your programme, we define a provisional schedule that supports regular progress.

Adjustments are always possible along the way. If your availability changes significantly, we can explore alternative solutions, including a change of teacher if needed.

This approach ensures both flexibility and continuity, without compromising the quality of your learning.

How are sessions scheduled?

At the beginning of your programme, we establish together a provisional schedule with regular days and times. This structure is key to ensuring consistent progress.

Changes can be made when needed, with at least 48 hours' notice, and are arranged directly with your teacher.

If your availability becomes difficult to align, our pedagogy team will support coordination and help find a suitable solution.

Can I reschedule a session?

Yes. Sessions can be rescheduled up to 48 hours in advance.

Beyond that, the session is considered due, as your teacher has reserved this time specifically for you.

Can I take a break during my programme?

Yes, for example during holidays or travel periods.

We simply ask that you inform your teacher as early as possible, out of respect for their schedule and to ensure continuity when you resume.

What happens if my teacher is unavailable (illness, holidays)?

If needed, we will do our best to organise a replacement teacher so your sessions can continue.

Thanks to our pedagogical coordination and shared learning framework, the transition is smooth and your progress is maintained.

In all cases, we aim to be reactive and supportive, even if last-minute situations can occasionally limit available options.

How long is each session?

Standard sessions are 1 hour 30 minutes.

For online sessions, shorter formats (minimum 1 hour) can be arranged if needed.

Are lessons online or in person?

Both. You can take your sessions:

  • online (via video)
  • in person in Paris
  • or combine both formats

Thanks to Neo, your learning platform, your content and progression remain consistent across formats.

This is particularly useful if you start learning before arriving in Paris and continue once you are here.

Can I combine online and in-person sessions?

Yes. FrenchUp can combine online and in-person sessions depending on your schedule, location and constraints.

Many learners choose a hybrid format, for example combining in-person French classes in Paris with online sessions when travelling or during busier periods.

The programme structure and pedagogical follow-up remain the same in both formats.

How do I get started?

You start by completing a short application form.

This allows us to understand your situation, your goals, your level, and your availability.

You are then invited to schedule a call with Fabienne, our pedagogy coordinator. This first conversation is an important step to ensure your programme is well designed from the start.

During this exchange, we:

  • clarify your learning objectives
  • define the structure and rhythm of your programme
  • confirm a provisional schedule

Following this, you receive a detailed training agreement outlining the content and organisation of your programme.

When can I start my programme?

You can usually start your programme within about one week after your initial interview, depending on availability.

For CPF-funded programmes, a minimum legal delay of 11 working days applies between the validation of your application and the start of your training.

Is there a trial session?

No. FrenchUp is a structured programme, not a series of standalone lessons. It requires preparation, alignment on objectives, and careful organisation from the start.

That said, you are not locked in. You can interrupt your programme at any time (see conditions in Can I pause or interrupt my programme? question).

How much does the programme cost?

The price of FrenchUp depends on the format you choose (1-on-1, duo or trio). You can find full details in the pricing section above.

Are prices inclusive of VAT?

Yes, all prices displayed for private individuals include applicable VAT.

For company- or OPCO-funded training, applicable VAT will be added.

How does payment work?

Payment is usually made by bank transfer, with no additional fees.

We can also offer payment in instalments, at no extra cost, depending on the programme format and schedule.

FrenchUp may also be financed through CPF (when combined with DCL preparation), or through company funding and OPCO support when applicable.

Can I use my CPF?

Yes. FrenchUp is eligible for CPF funding when combined with preparation for the DCL (Diplôme de Compétence en Langue – FLE).

In this case, your programme integrates exam preparation alongside your personalised learning objectives.

We will guide you through each step of the process to ensure everything is set up properly.

Can it be financed by my company or OPCO?

Yes. FrenchUp can be funded by your company or through OPCO, depending on your situation.

We handle the administrative aspects with you, including the preparation of all required documents (training agreement, programme, etc.), and can liaise directly with your company or HR team if needed.

The programme can start once funding approval has been confirmed.

Why is FrenchUp organised as a 30-hour programme?

FrenchUp is designed as a structured learning programme rather than a collection of isolated lessons.

The 30-hour format is designed to support significant and measurable progress, typically corresponding to approximately half to one CEFR level depending on your starting point, consistency and level of engagement.

This format creates enough continuity, repetition and exposure to the language to support lasting progress over time, while remaining compatible with the rhythm of professional and personal life.

It also allows space for:

  • structured thematic sessions
  • personalised ad-hoc sessions
  • revision and consolidation
  • continuous pedagogical follow-up

For most learners, this represents the right balance between flexibility, consistency and meaningful progress.

Can I pause or interrupt my programme?

Yes. If you need to stop or interrupt your programme before the end of the contract period, the hours already completed will simply be charged on a pro-rata basis.

If the interruption occurs after the sixth hour of classes, a fixed administrative fee of €120 will also apply.

We always aim to handle these situations as smoothly and fairly as possible, depending on your circumstances.

Can I change teacher?

Your teacher is carefully selected to match your profile, goals and availability, and is meant to follow you throughout your programme.

If a difficulty arises, whether related to the fit or to scheduling, we can review the situation and, if needed, organise a change of teacher.

We approach this thoughtfully to preserve the continuity and quality of your learning.
