The 15th arrondissement: Paris, just as it's lived

A peaceful, residential neighborhood. Quiet, grounded and full of life. A place for families, routines and roots.

The 15th isn't one of those neighborhoods you stumble upon by chance. People come here to live and maybe that's why it feels like home so quickly. You won't find iconic monuments on every corner. And yet, every so often, the Eiffel Tower appears, peeking out between buildings or from a quiet streets. She's close by, but never overshadows what truly defines the 15th: everyday life.

Broad, calm avenues. Neighborhood schools. Bustling bakeries. Small markets full of color and conversation. We especially love the Grenelle Market, held beneath the elevated metro tracks on Wednesdays and Sundays and filled with rolling baskets, the scent of roast chicken and aged cheese and friendly nods exchanged between regulars. It's local life, in its purest form.

For a leisurely stroll, rue du Commerce is a classic, perfectly named, with its Parisian shops, cozy cafés and the Café du Commerce, a charming old brasserie. And when the shopping mood strikes, we head to Beaugrenelle, a modern mall by the Seine that blends seamlessly into the neighborhood's rhythm.

But the real joy here? Walking. Along the cobbled banks of the Seine, all the way to Parc André Citroën, where a tethered balloon lifts you up above the rooftops. Or along the leafy Allée des Cygnes, home to a small Statue of Liberty that nods at the passing riverboats - and evokes whimsical scenes from Lost in Paris, the charming film by Abel and Gordon. Around Dupleix, Cambronne, or Convention, you'll find peaceful corners that feel like little villages tucked within the city.

At novexpat, we love teaching here because we love the rhythm of the 15th: human, grounded and easy to connect with. It's home to families, new parents and expats looking to settle into a part of Paris they can truly call their own - some even dreaming of becoming cordon bleus. You might learn French in a parent-friendly café, hear kids laughing as they leave a bilingual school, or listen to different languages mingling on a park bench. It's a quieter Paris but a vibrant and generous one. Open and welcoming, without ever needing to shout.

2 Parisian Cafés Where to Take Your French Lessons in Paris 15

Over 11,000 hours of lessons – and almost as many spent in Parisian cafés with our learners!
Not just because we're coffee lovers (okay, maybe a little), but because the Parisian café is one of the most practical, inspiring, and culturally rich places to take a French lesson.

We're always on the lookout for authentic, welcoming cafés ideal for private French lessons. We carefully select and recommend spots in the 15th arrondissement that match your mood, the weather, and the vibe of your neighborhood.

French Lessons in the 15th: A Perfect Excuse to Explore the Neighborhood

In the midst of busy schedules, daily errands, and the challenges of expat life, it can be hard to make space for yourself. But taking French lessons is more than just language learning – it's also a chance to slow down, connect, and immerse yourself in the rhythm of Paris.

Why not extend your lesson into a little urban escape?
Wander a side street, admire an architectural detail, or step into an offbeat boutique or museum. Every corner of the 15th arrondissement offers a slice of Paris worth discovering.

We're passionate about this city, and we love sharing our favorite addresses, secret spots, and daily rituals with our learners. Because learning French should be more than grammar and verbs: it should feel like a real immersion in the Parisian way of life. We're here to help you fully experience your French moment and truly feel at home in Paris.

And until your next French class? We've already picked out three magical spots to explore in Paris 15. Honestly, it was tough to choose from our long list of favorites!

The Petite Ceinture starts quietly on rue Olivier de Serres and stretches all the way to Balard - a sort of mini High Line à la française. The trail follows 19th-century railway tracks, now reclaimed by nature, with over 220 plant and animal species thriving here.

It's the perfect place for a stroll after visiting Parc André Citroën or heading toward the Georges Brassens Park. You walk, you breathe, you observe - maybe grab a flan at Max Poilâne or dinner at Walczak, a real locals' haunt once frequented by Brassens himself.

The walk isn't long, but it's a breath of fresh air just steps from the city buzz.

Opposite 99 Rue Olivier de Serres, 75015 Paris

Our favorite detour in the 15th. At the end of rue Santos-Dumont, just past a row of tidy buildings, a hidden cobbled lane opens up. You'll find period houses, artist studios, flowered facades, colorful gates - and a surprising silence.

For a few moments, you forget you're in Paris. It feels like a village. Fernand Léger and Ossip Zadkine lived here, Georges Brassens just nearby. Bikes lean casually against the walls, completing the postcard.

It's a place to wander with no destination, just to soak in the charm. You'll wish you could stay - even just for a night.

Villa Santos-Dumont, 75015 Paris

One of those insider tips passed from parent to parent: Otipi is where grownups can finally relax while the kids play freely. Great coffee for the adults, toys for the little ones… and if you fall in love with something, it's probably for sale. They also offer workshops for children and occasional events for (future) parents, hosted by top-notch experts.

We love coming here for a snack, chatting with other parents in French, and watching the kids explore. It's warm, lively, and truly welcoming. And during school holidays? They're open - with a program that's always fun and creative!

A kind, simple space where everyone finds their place.

Who am I?

Bonjour, I'm Fabienne Defaux!

I'm a French as a Foreign Language teacher and a true Paris enthusiast – especially when it comes to the 15th arrondissement a place that feels like home - Paris, as it's lived, simply.

For over 14 years, I've been helping expats and their families settle into life in Paris. In 2017, together with my husband Pierre-Yves, I founded novexpat with one clear goal: to offer personalized French lessons designed for the real lives of expats – so they can navigate daily life in Paris with more ease, confidence, and joy.

At novexpat, real life is our classroom. Our courses are built around the everyday situations you face – at work, at school, in the market, or on a café terrace – so you can start speaking and understanding French naturally, right from the start.

What do our learners often tell us?
✨ That each lesson immediately helps them better understand their surroundings, connect more easily with locals, and feel more at home – whether for getting tips from shopkeepers on rue du Commerce, ordering a steak-frites in a neighborhood brasserie, or discussing the fascinating life of Louis Pasteur with fellow parents from Jeannine Manuel, or participating in a work meeting with French-speaking colleagues.

With a team of 10+ experienced teachers and a deeply human approach, we design a learning experience that adapts to your goals, schedule, and lifestyle – and yes, even your neighborhood!

Throughout your journey, I stay personally involved to make sure everything fits: the right teacher, the right pace, and the right approach – just for you.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Where do classes take place in the 15th arrondissement?

We teach across the 15th, especially around Dupleix, Commerce, Motte-Picquet – Grenelle, Convention, Javel, and Pasteur. Lessons can happen at your home, in a cozy nearby café, at your workplace, or online - whatever suits your schedule best.

Are your French classes suitable for complete beginners?

Absolutely! Our French lessons are tailored for expats, even total beginners. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable speaking French in real-life situations — at the doctor's office, in shops, at your child's school, during administrative appointments or at the coffee machine with your coworkers.

How long does it take to make progress?

It all depends on your starting point and your objectives. Thanks to our practical approach and personalized support, each course gives you the keys to progress in the situations that matter to you. For our FrenchUp learners, we see an average improvement of one language level every 30 hours.

What's the difference between your courses and something like Duolingo or Preply?

Our classes are based on real-life needs, not just grammar or vocabulary lists. Unlike language apps or fully automated platforms, we offer a personalized and structured learning experience with professional teachers who understand the expat life in Paris. We help you speak, connect, and integrate — not just memorize, with highly qualified teachers.

Can my company pay for the lessons?

In many cases, yes! We can help you present your learning plan to your HR or mobility team. Our training programs are structured, goal-oriented, and make sense as part of a professional integration or development plan. You can also use your CPF to finance part of your training. Don't hesitate to consult our page dedicated to financing or contact us to discuss it together.

How do I know which French course is right for me?

We're committed to presenting all our programs on the site in a thorough and comprehensive way. We've also created a free quiz to help you identify the program best suited to your level, goals and schedule. It's quick, non-binding and gives you a personalized recommendation in just 2 minutes. Finally, if you still have any doubts, don't hesitate to book a discovery call with Fabienne, our teaching consultant. She'll guide you towards the program that's right for you.
