The 10th arrondissement: a diverse and surprising Paris

A neighborhood with many faces, often overlooked, always surprising and a fantastic place to experience French in all its richness and nuance.

The 10th is a crossroads. Of people, cultures, and styles. It's often reduced to its massive, bustling train stations – Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est – but this arrondissement deserves much more than a passing glance. This is a Paris that reveals itself in layers, through unexpected details and quiet discoveries.

It's the arrondissement of the Canal Saint-Martin, with its chic and bohemian banks where we like to stroll on Sunday mornings – or even take a dip in summer! Like Amélie, we might cross one of the arched footbridges and watch barges slip slowly through the locks. Around us, there's a distinctly hip, eco-conscious energy in the streets. A coffee on Place Sainte-Marthe, after exploring its colorful, artsy side street, always feels like a moment of calm in a city that never stands still.

And then, suddenly, we're traveling. On foot. Just a few blocks north to Rue Cail or south to Passage Brady, and we find ourselves immersed in the colors and aromas of an Indian market, savoring dosas and idlis as if we were in Chennai. Between the two, we might browse the covered Saint-Quentin market or slip into the peaceful palm-lined reading room at the luminous Françoise Sagan library. Hard to believe we're still just steps from the bustle of boulevard Magenta.

At night, the atmosphere shifts again. Streets like rue des Petites Écuries, rue d'Enghien, and rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis fill with Parisians heading out: for drinks in a stylish retro bar, dinner at a Belle Époque brasserie, an improv show in a basement, stand-up at the Jamel Comedy Club or a literary reading in one of the area's many independent theaters.

The 10th is a Paris in motion, vibrant, mixed, and constantly reinventing itself. It blends atmospheres and influences like Place de la République, just on the edge of the district: a space that can be festive, solemn, activist or simply alive with voices. This part of the city might surprise you, challenge you or win you over – but it will never leave you indifferent.

At novexpat, we love teaching here because it's a place that breaks down clichés. A place where we not only teach the language, but also explore how people live, meet, and grow. In the 10th, learning French means learning to see the world differently, with nuance, curiosity… and openness.

French Lessons in the 10th: A Perfect Excuse to Explore the Neighborhood

In the midst of busy schedules, daily errands, and the challenges of expat life, it can be hard to make space for yourself. But taking French lessons is more than just language learning – it's also a chance to slow down, connect, and immerse yourself in the rhythm of Paris.

Why not extend your lesson into a little urban escape?
Wander a side street, admire an architectural detail, or step into an offbeat boutique or museum. Every corner of the 10th arrondissement offers a slice of Paris worth discovering.

We're passionate about this city, and we love sharing our favorite addresses, secret spots, and daily rituals with our learners. Because learning French should be more than grammar and verbs: it should feel like a real immersion in the Parisian way of life. We're here to help you fully experience your French moment and truly feel at home in Paris.

And until your next French class? We've already picked out three magical spots to explore in Paris 10. Honestly, it was tough to choose from our long list of favorites!

Just steps from Gare de l'Est, the Françoise Sagan library is a true hidden gem in the 10th. Located in a former infirmary of the Saint-Lazare prison, it blends old-world charm with modern comfort: soft light, wide open spaces, cozy chairs, and a peaceful interior garden.

You can read on-site or borrow novels, comics, DVDs, newspapers, and more. Registration is free for all Paris residents, and it's even open on Sundays – a real luxury!

We love sitting in the Saint-Lazare garden, among stone benches, palm trees and silence. Many come just to read, talk, or pause. It's a place that encourages you to slow down and open up.

8 Rue Léon Schwartzenberg, 75010 Paris

No need to overhype it: Chez Jeannette is an unpretentious bistro that's become a true neighborhood institution. Tarnished mirrors, retro chandeliers, vintage tiles, classic deviled eggs… and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, where regulars rub shoulders with students, artsy locals, low-key celebs and neighbors stopping in for a drink.

It's easy to feel at home here, whether you're grabbing a morning coffee or sharing a drink in the evening. People chat, laugh, live. A simple, lively place where Paris reveals itself at street level, one conversation at a time.

The perfect spot to catch the spirit of a popular, ever-evolving neighborhood.

47 Rue du Faubourg St-Denis, 75010 Paris

Just across from the covered Saint-Martin market, Passage du Marché is one of those secret Paris corners. You step through a discreet arch, and suddenly everything changes: cobblestones, a touch of bohemian flair, and walls covered in vibrant street art.

It's quiet, pedestrian-only, almost timeless. A few bars and restaurants have set up terraces here, and it's a lovely spot to grab a drink or a bite far from the noise of the big boulevards. You'll meet curious visitors, families, and longtime locals.

A hidden pocket of the city, part village, part open-air gallery.

Who am I?

Bonjour, I'm Fabienne Defaux!

I'm a French as a Foreign Language teacher and a true Paris enthusiast – especially when it comes to the 10th arrondissement a neighborhood I really love for its vibrant energy, its peaceful charm around the Canal Saint-Martin, its colorful corners, its cool cafés… slightly off the beaten path, but so lovely to explore and live in.

For over 14 years, I've been helping expats and their families settle into life in Paris. In 2017, together with my husband Pierre-Yves, I founded novexpat with one clear goal: to offer personalized French lessons designed for the real lives of expats – so they can navigate daily life in Paris with more ease, confidence, and joy.

At novexpat, real life is our classroom. Our courses are built around the everyday situations you face – at work, at school, in the market, or on a café terrace – so you can start speaking and understanding French naturally, right from the start.

What do our learners often tell us?
✨ That each lesson immediately helps them better understand their surroundings, connect more easily with locals, and feel more at home – whether asking for home decor inspiration at La Trésorerie, ordering a classic French snack at La Cave à Michel, commenting quirky anatomy exhibits at the strange and fascinating Musée des Moulages (for the strong of stomach!), picking up Sunday market groceries on rue Alibert, chatting with other parents during a school parent meet-up, or participating in a work meeting with French-speaking colleagues.

With a team of 10+ experienced teachers and a deeply human approach, we design a learning experience that adapts to your goals, schedule, and lifestyle – and yes, even your neighborhood!

Throughout your journey, I stay personally involved to make sure everything fits: the right teacher, the right pace, and the right approach – just for you.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Where do classes take place in the 10th arrondissement?

We teach in different areas of the 10th – especially around Canal Saint-Martin, République, Saint-Denis, and Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. Classes can be held at your home, in handpicked cafés near you, at your workplace, or online if you prefer more flexibility.

Are your French classes suitable for complete beginners?

Absolutely! Our French lessons are tailored for expats, even total beginners. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable speaking French in real-life situations — at the doctor's office, in shops, at your child's school, during administrative appointments or at the coffee machine with your coworkers.

How long does it take to make progress?

It all depends on your starting point and your objectives. Thanks to our practical approach and personalized support, each course gives you the keys to progress in the situations that matter to you. For our FrenchUp learners, we see an average improvement of one language level every 30 hours.

What's the difference between your courses and something like Duolingo or Preply?

Our classes are based on real-life needs, not just grammar or vocabulary lists. Unlike language apps or fully automated platforms, we offer a personalized and structured learning experience with professional teachers who understand the expat life in Paris. We help you speak, connect, and integrate — not just memorize, with highly qualified teachers.

Can my company pay for the lessons?

In many cases, yes! We can help you present your learning plan to your HR or mobility team. Our training programs are structured, goal-oriented, and make sense as part of a professional integration or development plan. You can also use your CPF to finance part of your training. Don't hesitate to consult our page dedicated to financing or contact us to discuss it together.

How do I know which French course is right for me?

We're committed to presenting all our programs on the site in a thorough and comprehensive way. We've also created a free quiz to help you identify the program best suited to your level, goals and schedule. It's quick, non-binding and gives you a personalized recommendation in just 2 minutes. Finally, if you still have any doubts, don't hesitate to book a discovery call with Fabienne, our teaching consultant. She'll guide you towards the program that's right for you.

Do you offer French classes for children in the 10th arrondissement?

Absolutely! We support expat children and international families with personalized French lessons – whether it's for a fun introduction or extra help with schoolwork. We work with kids and parents attending, for instance, the bilingual Italian school Vicq d'Azir or La Canopée. Our classes are playful, age-appropriate, and help children grow in both language and confidence. Lessons can take place at home, online, or in a convenient location in the 10th.
