The 9th arrondissement: where Paris moves and breathes

A dense, dynamic district where voices rise, laughter echoes and flavors surround us… learning French here means being part of the rhythm.

The 9th is Paris in motion, urban, vibrant, sometimes a little wild. On Rue des Martyrs, everything tempts us: the crispy sandwiches from PainPain, cream-filled chouquettes glistening in the window, fruit stands arranged like still lifes, and cheeses aged to perfection. We walk, we taste, we chat. Here, French flows as naturally as breathing, to order, to greet, to ask for advice, or simply to connect.

Further up, Avenue Trudaine offers a magical view of Sacré-Cœur framed by Square d'Anvers. Westward, we wander into the elegant calm of Saint-Georges and Nouvelle Athènes, past violin-makers' workshops and stylish bistros. We stumble on a stained-glass window inspired by Hokusai next to a private alley, press pause at the Musée de la Vie Romantique, or spiral through the Gustave Moreau Museum. And we always stop at Place Saint-Georges, quiet, charming and perfect for a moment of calm.

Downhill, the pace quickens. Around Opéra, department stores buzz, sidewalks brim with tourists and office workers. But a quick escape leads us to the rooftop of Galeries Lafayette, for that breath-stealing view of the Paris skyline and the golden dome of the Palais Garnier, home to the Paris Opera.

At night, when other neighborhoods wind down, the 9th keeps going: theaters, concert halls, Grands Boulevards cinemas, the buzzing terraces of Faubourg-Montmartre. Conversations spill into the streets, the lights stay on and Paris feels more alive than ever.

At novexpat, we love teaching here because of that energy, because French in the 9th is alive in every exchange, every performance, every café counter. It's a neighborhood that invites you to express yourself, find your voice, and feel truly Parisian.

2 Parisian Cafés Where to Take Your French Lessons in Paris 9

Over 11,000 hours of lessons – and almost as many spent in Parisian cafés with our learners!
Not just because we're coffee lovers (okay, maybe a little), but because the Parisian café is one of the most practical, inspiring, and culturally rich places to take a French lesson.

We're always on the lookout for authentic, welcoming cafés ideal for private French lessons. We carefully select and recommend spots in the 9th arrondissement that match your mood, the weather, and the vibe of your neighborhood.

French Lessons in the 9th: A Perfect Excuse to Explore the Neighborhood

In the midst of busy schedules, daily errands, and the challenges of expat life, it can be hard to make space for yourself. But taking French lessons is more than just language learning – it's also a chance to slow down, connect, and immerse yourself in the rhythm of Paris.

Why not extend your lesson into a little urban escape?
Wander a side street, admire an architectural detail, or step into an offbeat boutique or museum. Every corner of the 9th arrondissement offers a slice of Paris worth discovering.

We're passionate about this city, and we love sharing our favorite addresses, secret spots, and daily rituals with our learners. Because learning French should be more than grammar and verbs: it should feel like a real immersion in the Parisian way of life. We're here to help you fully experience your French moment and truly feel at home in Paris.

And until your next French class? We've already picked out three magical spots to explore in Paris 9. Honestly, it was tough to choose from our long list of favorites!

Stepping into Passage Jouffroy feels like stepping back in time. A glass roof, marble floors, vintage signs… This 19th-century covered arcade was the first to be heated from the floor! It's a film set waiting to happen ; Parisian charm mixed with curious old treasures. We absolutely love it.

Wander past carved canes, rare books, old-fashioned toys and café, or slip out through the artists' exit of the theatre or nearby Grévin Museum, then cross to Passage Verdeau, equally refined.

And if you've got time, continue to Hôtel Drouot, just around the corner. There, explore the week's exhibits or watch a live auction. You'll get a taste of a secret, theatrical side of Paris that's truly captivating.

10-12 Boulevard Montmartre, 75009 Paris

Venture to the end of a rose-lined cobblestone path and you'll find a green-shuttered house with a charming garden, a countryside feel right in the middle of the 9th arrondissement.

Welcome to the Musée de la Vie Romantique, once home to painter Ary Scheffer. Delacroix, Chopin, Liszt, and George Sand all gathered here and many of Sand's personal belongings are still carefully preserved. Explore delicate paintings, intimate salons, and an atmosphere rich in poetry and emotion.

It's a joy to linger in the garden or under the café's glass canopy—quiet, peaceful, far from Paris's usual buzz. Entry is free, and surprisingly, it's rarely crowded. Maybe that's what makes it one of the district's best-kept secrets. We can't wait for it to reopen in 2026!

16 Rue Chaptal, 75009 Paris

Between department stores and theaters, you'd never guess there's a banking palace behind these Haussmann façades on Boulevard Haussmann. And yet… Behind its doors, Société Générale reveals an interior masterpiece of Art Nouveau design.

You enter like any bank… but step into another era: a large circular wooden counter, a stunning 24-meter-wide glass-and-metal dome, mosaics, and a hushed grandeur. It all evokes the trust and splendor of the Belle Époque.

And below ground? Gigantic vaults are still in use, protected by a 40 cm-thick armored door.

No need to be a customer – just walk in during opening hours. One more example of the quiet treasures Paris offers to all.

Who am I?

Bonjour, I'm Fabienne Defaux!

I'm a French as a Foreign Language teacher and a true Paris enthusiast – especially when it comes to the 9th arrondissement a vibrant, electrifying district that lives day and night, one I love for its lively vibe and contagious energy.

For over 14 years, I've been helping expats and their families settle into life in Paris. In 2017, together with my husband Pierre-Yves, I founded novexpat with one clear goal: to offer personalized French lessons designed for the real lives of expats – so they can navigate daily life in Paris with more ease, confidence, and joy.

At novexpat, real life is our classroom. Our courses are built around the everyday situations you face – at work, at school, in the market, or on a café terrace – so you can start speaking and understanding French naturally, right from the start.

What do our learners often tell us?
✨ That each lesson immediately helps them better understand their surroundings, connect more easily with locals, and feel more at home – whether asking for advice from Printemps staff, ordering steak at Caillebotte, reacting to a show at the Folies Bergère, shopping on Rue des Martyrs, chatting with fellow parents at a school event, or participating in a work meeting with French-speaking colleagues.

With a team of 10+ experienced teachers and a deeply human approach, we design a learning experience that adapts to your goals, schedule, and lifestyle – and yes, even your neighborhood!

Throughout your journey, I stay personally involved to make sure everything fits: the right teacher, the right pace, and the right approach – just for you.
