The 16th arrondissement: elegance, greenery and peaceful charm for learning French

A chic, tranquil district of hidden villas, cultural gems, and lush green spaces.

The 16th arrondissement is a different kind of Paris – more refined, luminous and almost village-like. Here, city life meets nature. Calm walkways, blooming squares and ivy-covered villas invite curiosity and quiet wonder. Art Deco and Art Nouveau façades add a timeless charm. Everything here seems to slow down - ideal for focused and mindful learning.

We love wandering through the village-like streets of Auteuil, stepping inside its greenhouses, spotting peacocks in the Parc de Bagatelle, or strolling past lakes and waterfalls in the Bois de Boulogne. Nearby, the grandstands of the Auteuil racecourse still echo with Hemingway's footsteps, as he sought elegance and thrill. In Passy, cobblestone lanes lead us back in time to Balzac's house, while just around the corner on Rue de Passy, we can't resist a stop at the Grande Epicerie de Paris.

But the 16th isn't only a haven of calm. It pulses with energy during matches at the Parc des Princes, home to PSG, and in May, during the buzz of Roland-Garros. At the Palais de Tokyo, art lovers and teen skaters share a vibrant space. Just off the Trocadéro, some linger at Carette over delicate pastries.

The 16th is definitely a family-friendly, cosmopolitan district. Children play in its parks, seniors chat on benches, celebrities leave the Maison de Radio France, and businesspeople settle discreetly at the Hôtel Raphaël's bar. With several international schools, it's an ideal base for expatriates and their families.

At novexpat, we love supporting our learners in this refined, peaceful setting — where speaking French comes naturally, gently… to the rhythm of rustling leaves, quiet greetings, or the scent of fresh pastries. A Paris of subtle beauty, where elegance meets simplicity.

French Lessons in the 16th: A Perfect Excuse to Explore the Neighborhood

In the midst of busy schedules, daily errands, and the challenges of expat life, it can be hard to make space for yourself. But taking French lessons is more than just language learning – it's also a chance to slow down, connect, and immerse yourself in the rhythm of Paris.

Why not extend your lesson into a little urban escape?
Wander a side street, admire an architectural detail, or step into an offbeat boutique or museum. Every corner of the 16th arrondissement offers a slice of Paris worth discovering.

We're passionate about this city, and we love sharing our favorite addresses, secret spots, and daily rituals with our learners. Because learning French should be more than grammar and verbs: it should feel like a real immersion in the Parisian way of life. We're here to help you fully experience your French moment and truly feel at home in Paris.

And until your next French class? We've already picked out three magical spots to discover in Paris 16. Let the adventure begin!

We're not sure why it's still under the radar — but that's exactly what makes it one of our best-kept secrets. The Parc de Bagatelle is where we go when we need to breathe, slow down, and reconnect. Tucked away in the Bois de Boulogne, it's a poetic blend of French and English garden styles, whimsical architecture… and yes, free-roaming peacocks like something out of a fairytale.

We love getting lost here. In spring, the rose garden perfumes the air with 1200 varieties; nearby, a lily pond evokes Monet; then a pagoda, a grotto, a tiny bridge… At every turn, something quiet, beautiful, unexpected. And just beyond the trees, the towers of La Défense peek through, a quiet reminder that we're still in Paris — just barely.

There's something deeply soothing about this park. Maybe it's because it invites not just strolling but dreaming. Either way, when we need a true reset, this is where we go. A magical little pause in the middle of it all.

42 Route de Sèvres À Neuilly, 75016 Paris

We often pass by and wonder who's on air at that very moment. France Inter, FIP, France Musique, France Info… all those familiar voices we hear every day come from one place: the Maison de la Radio, on the banks of the Seine. A round, almost mysterious building by architect Henry Bernard — and a world unto itself.

We love attending live recordings here. Yes, it's free, and no, you don't need to be a VIP! Inside, it's a quiet buzz of activity: headphone-wearing techs, focused journalists, guests coming and going… The universe of radio opens up, calm but perfectly in rhythm.

And we love playing a little game — can we spot a “FIPette” (those soft, very Parisian voices)? Or glimpse a celeb heading in for an interview: a singer, a minister, a novelist… Just waiting at the entrance can feel like a show in itself.

It's alive, vibrant, cultural — and free. We recommend it to all our expat friends… and go back ourselves every chance we get.

116 Avenue du Président Kennedy, 75016 Paris

This is one of our favorite museums — not least because it's still off the typical tourist track. Nestled in a stunning Empire-style mansion, the Marmottan Museum is a quiet haven for priceless works of French art.

Here, you can linger in front of Monet's Impression, Soleil Levant — yes, the painting that gave Impressionism its name — with no crowds, just peace and natural light. There's also the emotional pull of Rue de Paris, Jour de pluie by Caillebotte, the grace of Berthe Morisot, the drama of Delacroix, the elegance of Manet, the shadows of Degas… and even a luminous Chagall to lead us into a dreamlike world.

What we love most is how slowly you can move here. Sit, contemplate, return another day — this museum gives you time to really see and feel the art.

And afterward, we usually walk through the nearby Jardin du Ranelagh, to hold onto that sense of beauty and calm a little longer. Honestly, we can't stay away.

Who am I?

Bonjour, I'm Fabienne Defaux!

I'm a French as a Foreign Language teacher and a true Paris enthusiast – especially when it comes to the 16th arrondissement with a uniquely calm and elegant atmosphere.

For over 14 years, I've been helping expats and their families settle into life in Paris. In 2017, together with my husband Pierre-Yves, I founded novexpat with one clear goal: to offer personalized French lessons designed for the real lives of expats – so they can navigate daily life in Paris with more ease, confidence, and joy.

At novexpat, real life is our classroom. Our courses are built around the everyday situations you face – at work, at school, in the market, or on a café terrace – so you can start speaking and understanding French naturally, right from the start.

What do our learners often tell us?
✨ That each lesson immediately helps them better understand their surroundings, connect more easily with locals, and feel more at home – whether they're ordering at a restaurant on Avenue Victor Hugo, doing their shopping on Rue de Passy, or catching a live show at Radio France, or participating in a work meeting with French-speaking colleagues.

With a team of 10+ experienced teachers and a deeply human approach, we design a learning experience that adapts to your goals, schedule, and lifestyle – and yes, even your neighborhood!

Throughout your journey, I stay personally involved to make sure everything fits: the right teacher, the right pace, and the right approach – just for you.

Don't hesitate to consult our page dedicated to financing or contact us to discuss it together.

How do I know which French course is right for me?

We're committed to presenting all our programs on the site in a thorough and comprehensive way.
